Institution Summary (Retention and Graduation) Inflated Retention Rates in QuickSight

The Campus Data Warehouse team is aware of a problem in production where retention rates on the Retention and Graduation dashboards in QuickSight are inflated as compared with our legacy system dashboards. We suspect that students are being counted as retained even if they have a zero unit load. We are currently investigating and working on a solution.

In the meantime, you may continue to use the Retention and Graduation dashboards in our legacy data warehouse available at csumb.edu/datawarehouse.

The Retention and Graduation dashboards in QuickSight remain unavailable to users until we work to resolve this and a few other issues.

This issue is being worked on in ITSR# 23520439.

Title: Institution Summary (Retention and Graduation) Inflated Retention Rates in QuickSight

Retention Rates on the Retention and Graduation dashboards in QuickSight are displaying inflated values compared with our legacy data warehouse. This is separate from the 'rehoming'  issue we are already working on

AWS/QuickSight is counting more students as retained than Oracle. See for example 2023 Fall First-Time Freshman cohort.
QuickSight shows 769 students re-enrolling in 2024 Fall (1-year retention) vs. 743 in Oracle.

ERSS Census in QuickSight shows 743 FTF from 2023 Fall cohort enrolled in 2024 Fall (matches Oracle):

Institution Summary in AWS/QuickSight shows 26 additional retained students from this cohort (inflating the retention rate).

These are the extra records appearing in AWS/QuickSight for the cohort:

004930372
004935377
004939212

Checked a couple of these yesterday and it seems like they have zero unit load for 2024 Fall. Suspect the logic is not checking for zero unit load.
